Room With
a View

From your rooftop terrace, its low-lit walls and potted grasses framing the Bay Bridge and glassy waters below, all is serene. But had this hotel existed 16 years ago, the sound track would have been of Embarcadero Freeway traffic several stories below. Since the overpass' demolition after the 1989 earthquake, the mile-long stretch of waterfront that it once dominated has enjoyed a renaissance, of which the Vitale, one of San Francisco's newest hotels, is the latest chapter. To your right, SBC Park has drawn legions of Giants fans since the first pitch was thrown in 2000. To your left, gourmets flock to the Ferry Building, now a high-rent food hall, and to its adjacent four-times-weekly farmer's market. To sample its bounty without whipping up your own in-room repast, head downstairs to the hotel's Americano, where chef Paul Arenstam bases his Italian creations on the day's market finds.
